My patio makeover with Bramley and White

After feeling dissatisfied with our outside area for quite some time – when you have young children and a small garden, it doesn’t take much for it to start resembling the local playground – I recently decided to give our patio space a quick and simple budget makeover to create an attractive dining area.

We already had a wooden dining table and six chairs, but due to lack of time to care properly for them, they had become worn and weather damaged. I toyed whether to replace them but ideally wanted to keep costs down.

You can imagine how thrilled I was when gorgeous independent interiors shop ‘Bramley and White’ contacted me and offered me some items for my garden, including a pot of Frenchic garden paint! I took a look at the colours available and chose a blue/grey tone called ‘Greyhound.’

When I take on a task, I strive for a good finish, but I also want to do the job quickly. There are never enough hours in the day when you are juggling work and motherhood! I was amazed to find out that in this instance I didn’t have to do anything but clean the table of any cobwebs and debris before I could apply the paint. The Frenchic website states ‘as with our indoor paint, the Al Fresco Collection is EN:71-3 certified meaning safe to paint children’s toys, it has no odour, no stirring or shaking required with very low VOC content. It is hard wearing, weatherproof with a robust and chalk finish and of course, it paints like a dream!’ I have to agree with this – it was so easy to apply and the transformation is incredible .

To further improve the patio area, I brought outside my Ikea rug that I was underneath my indoor dining table. It isn’t strictly an outdoor rug, but it is very low pile and with the lack of rain lately, I decided to take a chance. The feel of a rug under your feet instantly makes a space feel more comfortable.

I took a trip to Homebase for some new plants and flowers, and re-arranged the plants I already had to make a pretty arrangement on the table and on the floor near the fence. I also bought a wire terrace rack and pots and made a small herb garden for my children to water and pick for home cooked dinners.

The gorgeous white planter on the table is by Umbra and was gifted to me by Bramley and White. They also sent me a solar powered lantern, which lights up beautifully at night.

I also purchased some festoon lights from Lights 4 Fun, my go-to shop for string lights. I tacked some nails into the fence and facia boards and hung the lights from them.

Now we have such a lovely area to sit and entertain friends. I just need to train myself not to look at the climbing frame and trampoline that fill the grassy area of our garden! I plan to paint the chairs in a contrasting colour soon, and I will definitely be going back for more Frenchic Alfresco paint as I am so happy with the results.

I’d like to introduce you to Becca – the lovely lady behind this gorgeous homewares shop and let her give you some more information on the delights that await you should you visit their bricks and mortar or online shop…

Hello! My name is Becca Sargison-Bowler and I was an upholstery designer for 15 years, designing for some of the UK’s largest retailers such as Made, Next, JLP, DFS, and Sofology.

One of the main reasons I started Bramley & White was to enable me to see more of my children. I now have more flexibility and run an interiors business that I love! I enjoy being able to work with people every day and help them realise their dream home.

I also teach furniture and product design at Nottingham Trent University. This gives me an opportunity to support new, up – and – coming designers.

The name of my shop was inspired by a beautiful bramley apple tree in our garden. Also, the original bramley apple tree was born in Southwell – the village next to where my shop is located. We do reupholstery, bespoke upholstery, interior design, project managing, upcycling, and are the official Frenchic paint supplier.

I love to re-upholster furniture and bring old pieces to life, as I believe in sustainability. I feel it is important to invest in quality pieces within the home.

Below are some of my favourite items in stock in our store:

I think you’ll agree that Becca is one inspirational lady – and a very talented one too. I hope you’ve enjoyed a little peep at what this lovely store has to offer and that you’ll take a look at their Instagram page and website:
